Reader Question:

Patient Statement Requirements

Question: What information must be on a patients statement? How can I make it easier to understand and to improve our ability to collect?

Pennsylvania Subscriber
Answer: The information on a patients statement should be whatever will make it clear that the patient receiving the statement owes the balance due. At the very least, patient statements should also include the date of service and a short but clear laymans description of the service. If the statement is being sent to the patient after insurance has paid or denied part or all of the services, the portion that the patient owes can be made clear with statements such as this is your 20 percent or this amount is your deductible.
