Question: I’m deciding whether become a certified professional coder. Should I spend a lot of time learning medical terminology?

Answer: Knowing medical terminology will probably make your job as a coder easier, but to pass the certified processional coder (CPC) exam, you need to answer 105 questions correctly out of 150 questions. There are eight questions about medical terminology.

You’d much better spend your time focusing on CPT® [Current Procedural Terminology] codes. Questions surrounding the 10,000; 20,000, 30,000; 40,000; 50,000; and 60,000 Series CPT® procedures constitute 60 questions and cover surgical procedures encompassing the entire body.
