Primary Care Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Fecal Disimpaction

Question: Is there a specific code our practice can assign for fecal disimpaction? We have been reporting 45999 (unlisted procedure, rectum) but arent sure this is correct.

Louisiana Subscriber

Answer: If the impaction is removed manually, as it most likely would be in an office setting, there is no distinct procedure code to assign. This is similar to a pelvic exam conducted during the course of an office visit. You assign the appropriate evaluation and management service code, along with 560.39 (impaction of intestine, other) as the diagnosis code.
