Pulmonology Coding Alert

Correction

The example under the heading "Consult, Critical Care Are Options" in the July 2002 Pulmonology Coding Alert article "Respiratory Acidosis/Alkalosis: Dont Let Diagnosis Coding Take Your Breath Away" should have stated that you can report ventilation management (94656) in addition to the intubation (31500) if the pulmonologist did not perform the inpatient consultation (99251-99255). Otherwise, because 94656 is bundled into 99251-99255 by the Correct Coding Initiative, you should bill only the intubation and the consult appended with modifier -25 (Significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management service by the same physician on the same day of the procedure or other service).
