Implementation may take up to 120 days, CMS says Time is running out to obtain your national provider identifier (NPI), so act today by visiting two Web sites.

On May 23, 2007, the NPI will replace healthcare professional identifiers. Getting an NPI is free and easy, the CMS purports in MLN Matters Number SE0679. But "once a provider obtains an NPI, it may take 120 days to implement the NPI in current business practices," the agency warns.
