READER QUESTION:

Marshfield Auditor's Sheet Is Not a CMS Tool

Question: What exactly is the Marshfield Clinic Auditor's worksheet? I have heard that it is a way to help practices get better at evaluation and management coding, but I don't know much beyond that.

Answer: The Marshfield Clinic Auditor's Worksheet is a tool specifically developed to help clarify application of the medical decision-making (MDM) portion of the documentation guidelines for E/M services. The worksheet was developed for use in physician offices.

Although the worksheet is widely used, it is not part of the CMS documentation guidelines for E/M services. It is available to regional carriers, but they are not required to use this worksheet during audits.
