Reader Question:

Relieve Racemic Epinephrine Worries by Reporting 94640, 94664

Question: What code is used for racemic epinephrine inhalation?Colorado SubscriberAnswer: Report the treatment with 94640 (Pressurized or nonpressurized inhalation treatment for acute airway obstruction or for sputum induction for diagnostic purposes [e.g., with an aerosol generator, nebulizer, metered dose inhaler or intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) device]) or 94664 (Demonstration and/or evaluation of patient utilization of an aerosol generator, nebulizer, metered dose inhaler or IPPB device) if the physician administers epinephrine using a nebulizer in the outpatient setting. As for reporting the actual racemic epinephrine supply, you may look into J7699 (NOC drugs, inhalation solution administered throughDME). However, it's still best to clarify it with your carrier before reporting anything since use of this drug yields coverage issues.
