Pulmonology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Tracheostomy Tube Change

Question: What CPT code is appropriate for a tracheotomy tube change when the fistula tract is well established?

New York Subscriber

Answer: In this scenario you would not need a separate code for the change of the tube because after the fistula tract is well established the change of tracheostomy tubes is included in the evaluation and management (E/M) service for the day.

The correct code will be selected from a range such as these: 99211-99215 (office or other outpatient visit for the evaluation and management of an established patient ... ), 99231-99233 (subsequent hospital care, per day, for the evaluation and management of a patient ... ) or 99281-99285 (emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient ... ).
