READER QUESTIONS:

Do 99070 and Medicare Mix? Maybe Not

Question: Would you please explain the basics of reporting code 99070?

Maryland Subscriber

Answer: You should never report 99070 (Supplies and materials [except spectacles], provided by the physician over and above those usually included with the office visit or other services rendered [list drugs, trays, supplies or materials provided]) for Medicare or any payer that follows Medicare guidelines.

Code 99070 has a "B" status, according to the 2005 Physician Fee Schedule. To see the fee schedule, go to

Significance: "B" status indicates that 99070 is a bundled code. In other words, Medicare bundles payment for "B" status codes into payment for other services not specified.

If you need to code for the drug, tray, supplies, or materials your physicians use during a procedure, you should report the appropriate HCPCS Level II Codes. If you report a covered and medically necessary service, the carriers should reimburse you for your services.
