Pulmonology Coding Alert

Review These Spirometry Basics

Spirometry is a test used to measure the functionality of the lungs (also known as a Pulmonary Function Test or PFT). It measures the flow and volume of air during inhalation and exhalation and is used by your pulmonologist in the evaluation of various respiratory disorders such as COPD, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. There are various CPT® codes that you can choose from to accurately report spirometry studies conducted by your pulmonologist or for interpretations of spirometric recordings:94010 (Spirometry, including graphic record, total and timed vital capacity, expiratory flow rate measurement[s], with or without maximal voluntary ventilation)94011 (Measurement of spirometric forced expiratory flows in an infant or child through 2 years of age)94014 (Patient-initiated spirometric recording per 30-day period of time; includes reinforced education, transmission of spirometric tracing, data capture, analysis of transmitted data, periodic recalibration and physician review and interpretation)
