Reader Question:

2 Feet Count as Multiple Scan Areas

Question: We performed a bone scan of both feet. Should we report CPT 78300 , representing a limited area, or 78305, which denotes multiple areas?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: Because you addressed both feet, you should report 78305 (Bone and/or joint imaging; multiple areas). This code tells the insurer that you imaged two or more anatomic sites, and each foot counts as a single site.

You should report 78300 (Bone and/or joint imaging; limited area) if you examined only one area, such as one foot, one arm or one leg.
