Reader Question:

CMS Manuals Lay Groundwork for Compliance

Question: Is there a CMS radiology coding guideline? Answer: CMS offers many guidelines specific to radiology services as well as general guidelines that apply to radiology. A good place to start is the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, Chapter 13 (www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Guidance/Manuals/Downloads/clm104c13.pdf). Another important resource is the National Coverage Determinations manual (www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Guidance/Manuals/Internet-Only-Manuals-IOMs-Items/CMS014961.html). Local Medicare contractors have many radiology policies, as well. You can search key terms on the CMS site through the coverage database at www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/. Local and national coverage determinations and articles are available there.
