Radiology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Follow-Up Aortogram

Question: I am trying to code an unusual situation. One physician started a procedure and conducted an aortogram via the right femoral approach. Later at the same session, another physician placed a stent and performed percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) via the right brachial approach. Afterward, the second physician performed another aortogram via the right femoral. Can both aortograms be charged?

Answer: No. Follow-up aortography to check the stent or the angiography is inherent in the procedure and related RS&I codes.
