Radiology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Hysterosonography

Question: How do I code a hysterosonography?

California Subscriber

Answer: The procedure is reported with starred code CPT 58340 * (catheterization and introduction of saline or contrast material for hysterosonography or hysterosalpingography) along with radiology code 76831 (hysterosonography, with or without color flow Doppler). Frequently, a second physician performs the injection while the radiologist does the imaging. In this case, each reports the appropriate codes.

If a diagnostic transvaginal ultrasound is conducted before the hysterosonography, it would also be appropriate to report 76830 (echography, transvaginal).
