Radiology Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Verify 'Venous Reflux' Before Coding

Question: We have a new radiologist on staff who uses the phrase "venous reflux" as patients' diagnoses. Is there a code for this condition? These patients typically have varicose veins and are having venous ultrasounds.

Minnesota Subscriber Answer: This is a great example of how two ICD-9 codes can exist for and be accurate representations of a condition - in this case, "Other specified disorders of circulatory system" codes 459.81 (Venous [peripheral] insufficiency, unspecified) and 459.89 (Other).

If the documentation indicates the patient has complications associated with varicosity, that is edema, pain or ulcer inflammation, you should choose 459.81; otherwise, 459.89 is more accurate.

If you're using coding software and input "venous reflux," either of these codes may pop up, and either is correct as long as you have the documentation to support your choice. Remember, it's a good idea to review both codes plus the codes above and below your selection to be sure you have identified the correct diagnosis code.
