Handle Hip Coding With Ease

Question: How should I code the following hip report? New Jersey Subscriber History: Hip Pain Under fluoro guidance, a 21-gauge needle was introduced into the joint space of the hip. Intra-articular position of the needle was confirmed with contrast administration. A mixture of 2 percent lidocaine and 80 mg of Depo-Medrol were injected into the joint space. The patient tolerated the procedure well. Answer: You should report this injection of a therapeutic agent into the hip joint using 20610 (Arthrocentesis, aspiration and/or injection; major joint or bursa [e.g., shoulder, hip, knee joint, subacromial bursa]). For fluoroscopic guidance, report 77002 (Fluoroscopic guidance for needle placement [e.g., biopsy, aspiration, injection, localization device]).If you're reporting the Depo-Medrol, too, report J1040 (Injection, methylprednisolone acetate, 80 mg). For the diagnosis, you should choose 719.45 (Pain in joint; pelvic region and thigh).
