IVC Filter Report

Question: How should I code a report that says "removal of IVC filter?"

California Subscriber

Answer: Unfortunately, CPT Codes doesn't offer a unique IVC removal code.

Physicians place IVC (inferior vena cava) filters to catch clots before they get to the heart and lungs. For many years, the filters were permanent. Advances in technology brought a new generation of removable filters. CPT just hasn't caught up.

One way: Many payers ask that you use the unlisted vascular procedure code and unlisted S&I imaging code that best fit your report.

Another way: Some payers will accept codes 75961 (Transcatheter retrieval, percutaneous, of intravascular foreign body [e.g., fractured venous or arterial catheter], radiological supervision and interpretation) and 37203 (Transcatheter retrieval, percutaneous, of intravascular foreign body [e.g., fractured venous or arterial catheter]).

Try this: Approach your payer with this coding strategy and find out in writing whether they'll pay this combination for IVC removal.

Note: According to CPT, you can't report a conscious sedation code with 37203 - it already includes conscious sedation.
