2 CT Scans In 1 Session

Question: Our radiologist performed a head CT scan and a temporal bone CT scan in the same session. Both scans were done without contrast material initially, followed by contrast materials and further sections. How should we report this visit? Missouri Subscriber Answer: Some practices perform a separate and distinct imaging exam for the temporal bones with different positioning and views than with head CT scanning. If the request justifies obtaining both exams, and the radiologist performs both exams, your claim should read: CPT 70470 (Computed tomography, head or brain; without contrast material, followed by contrast material[s] and further sections) CPT 70482 (Computed tomography, orbit, sella, or posterior fossa or outer, middle, or inner ear; without contrast material, followed by contrast material[s] and further sections) with modifier -59 (Distinct procedural service) attached. -- Reader Question and You be the Expert were reviewed by Catherine Brink, CMM, CPC, president of Healthcare Resource Management in Spring Lake, N.J.
