NPI and CMS-1500 Form Do's and Don'ts

If you're looking for "just the facts," here's a quick list of Do's and Don'ts that can help make your transition easier. Do: • Get a timeline from your billing software vendor that indicates when your system will begin using the updated CMS-1500 form. • Expect a ramp-up period to allow for the new CMS-1500 forms to work properly with your software. • Start the process of getting National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers for your practice as well as for each physician in the group. • Decide whether you'll apply by paper or electronically. Don't: • Wait too long to start changing your billing software. April 2, 2007, is the deadline, and it's just around the corner. • Forget to visit the NPPES Web site for all the details about getting your practice an NPI number. Go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do.
