Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

52310 vs. 52315 Depends on Stone Size

Question: One of my doctors did a cystoscopy with removal of stones from a prostatic channel false passage. What would be an appropriate code for this? Illinois Subscriber Answer: For the cystoscopy with stone removal from the prostatic channel false passage, you should report either 52310 (Cystourethroscopy, with removal of foreign body, calculus, or ureteral stent from urethra or bladder [separate procedure]; simple) or 52315 (... complicated) depending on the size and number of stones removed. Assign diagnosis code 602.0 (Calculus of prostate) for the prostatic calculi/stones.
