Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

76942 Or 76998 Depends on Place of Service

Question: Would there be an appropriate ultrasound code when the physician does an ultrasound guided punch suprapubic tube placement with CPT 51040 ? Wisconsin Subscriber Answer: You should report 51102 (Aspiration of bladder; with insertion of suprapubic catheter) for the punch cystostomy. Additionally: If the procedure took place in the office, report 76942 (Ultrasonic guidance for needle placement [e.g., biopsy, aspiration, injection, localization device], imaging supervision and interpretation) for the ultrasonic guidance. However, if your urologist performed the procedure in the hospital operating room, use 76942-26 (Professional component) or 76998-26 (Ultrasonic guidance, intraoperative) for the ultrasonic guidance.
