Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

BPH With Hyperplasia

Question: What diagnosis code should we use for BPH with two areas of atypical hyperplasia?

Connecticut Subscriber
Answer: There is no code that specific. Access code 600.0 (hyperplasia of prostate; hypertrophy [benign] of prostate) as the primary diagnosis, and for a secondary diagnosis, code 236.5 (neoplasm of uncertain behavior of genitourinary organs; prostate) if there is a well-defined change but subsequent behavior cannot be determined. These are the diagnosis codes for follow-up visits.
