Code Polymark Markers As You Would Other Markers

Question: How should I code for polymark marker placement?Washington SubscriberAnswer: You should code the placement of polymark markers the same as other radiation markers for the prostate. Use 55876 (Placement of interstitial device[s] for radiation therapy guidance [e.g., fiducial markers, dosimeter], percutaneous, prostate, single or multiple).Remember: According to the May 2007 CPT Assistant, you should report 55876 only when your urologist implants metallic marker seeds (also called fiducial markers) -- not brachytherapy needles or seeds -- into the prostate gland. Since polymark markers are not brachytherapy seeds, 55876 is appropriate.
