Reader Question:

Ensure Accuracy With Concurrent Ureteroneocystostomy Services

Question: How should I code an extravesical ureteroneocystostomy the urologist performed laparoscopically with robotic assistance?

Answer: First, you should determine whether the urologist performed a cystoscopy and placed a ureteral stent during the encounter. If the urologist did place a stent, you would report 50947 (Laparoscopy, surgical; ureteroneocystostomy with cystoscopy and ureteral stent placement). If they did not place a stent, you would choose 50948 (Laparoscopy, surgical; ureteroneocystostomy without cystoscopy and ureteral stent placement) instead.

To code for the robotic assistance, you would choose HCPCS code S2900 (Surgical techniques requiring use of robotic surgical system (list separately in addition to code for primary procedure)). Because this service is included in either code, it is not separately payable, but should still appear on the claim.
