Reader Question:

S3 and S4 Blocks Qualify for Peripheral Block Code 64450

Question: A patient has a neurogenic bladder with refractory urge incontinence and bladder spasms. Our urologist administered a sacral nerve block on the S3 and S4 sacral foramina. What code should I use for this procedure?

Answer: Clinically speaking, the lateral branches of the dorsal sacral nerve plexus are considered peripheral nerves. Because of this, you should report branch block injections at S3 and S4 with two units of 64450 (Injection, anesthetic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch).
