Reader Question:

Stick with 52282 for Permanent Stent

Question: I saw your article on new 2015 codes 52441 and 52442. Is there a specific code for a permanent intra-urethral urethral stent or prostatic stent? Will I be able to use 52441 and 52442 for those stents?

Answer: No, you should not report either of the two new 2015 CPT® endoscopic codes for intra-urethral or prostatic urethral stents:

  • 52441 — Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of permanent adjustable transprostatic implant; single implant
  • +52442 — ... each additional permanent adjustable transprostatic implant (list separately in addition to code for primary procedure).

Codes 52441 and 52442 are for insertion of implants within the prostate, not intra-urethral stents. These codes do not represent the placement of a stent(s).

How it works: When your urologist places a permanent urethral stent — a stent in the urethra itself or a stent in the prostatic urethra — you will report 52282 (Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of permanent urethral stent). Use 52282 for either a permanent or a temporary urethral stent in the anterior urethra.

For a temporary prostatic stent, report 53855 (Insertion of a temporary prostatic urethral stent, including urethral measurement).
