Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Urgency

Question: When I see urgency in the chart, Im not sure which diagnosis code to use. Can I use the diagnosis code for incontinence?

Florida Subscriber  Answer: No you cannot use the incontinence diagnosis code if the chart says urgency. The most accurate diagnosis code for urgency is 788.69 (other abnormality of urination). Urgency, if severe, can lead to incontinence. If incontinence is present as well, use the diagnosis code for urge incontinence (788.31) instead of 788.69. -- Answers to You Be the Coder and Reader Questions provided by   Michael A.
