Reader Questions:

52214 Isn't Gender Specific

Question: I have a female patient that had fulguration of the bladder and trigone. The descriptor of CPT 52214 mentions the prostate, so I don't think I should be using that code. How should I report the procedure?Answer: You should report 52214 (Cystourethroscopy, with fulguration [including cryosurgery or laser surgery] of trigone, bladder neck, prostatic fossa, urethra, or periurethral glands) for this procedure. The code descriptor does mention "prostatic fossa," but also says "or." Therefore, this code can apply to both male or female patients.
