Reader Questions:

Turn to 76872 When Measuring Prostatic Size

Question: Our urology group is doing a prostate volume study before transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT). We are not doing a complete transrectal ultrasound. So should we charge 76873 volume study rather than 76872? We are uncertain since 76873 is a volume measurement performed for patients who are to undergo brachytherapy.

Texas Subscriber  Answer: You're correct to question using 76873 (Ultrasound, transrectal; prostate volume study for brachytherapy treatment planning [separate procedure]). For determining prostate volumes before a TUMT, you should use sonographic code 76872 (Ultrasound, transrectal).

Code 76873 is a sonographic volume study of the prostate gland using specialized radiological equipment in patients who are to have prostatic seed implantation for treatment of localized prostatic carcinoma. These special measurements are used to determine the radiation dosage needed to sterilize the tumor mass.
