Code This Combo Repair Procedure
Question: What is the appropriate procedure coding for an escutcheonectomy in conjunction with a scrotoplasty and buried penis repair? AAPC Forum Participant Answer: The escutcheonectomy and the buried penis repair can be completed during the same procedure, so you will not report these separately. Since the escutcheon is the tissue located just above the penis and below the mons pubis, the urologist will perform the escutcheonectomy during the same repair procedure for buried penis. To correctly code these procedures, you’ll submit 54300 (Plastic operation of penis for straightening of chordee (eg, hypospadias), with or without mobilization of urethra) for the repair of a buried penis. Then, you’ll choose 55175 (Scrotoplasty; simple) or 55180 (… complicated) for the scrotoplasty based on the urologist’s documentation. Lindsey Bush, BA, MA, CPC, Production Editor, AAPC
