Question: How should we bill for stent removal?

Anonymous Oregon Subscriber

Answer: Stent removal should be billed 52310 (cystourethroscopy, with removal of foreign body, calculus, or ureteral stent from urethra or bladder [separate procedure]; simple) with a modifier -58. The modifier -58 is to indicate that this was a planned procedure because when you placed the stent, you obviously intended to remove it at some time. If the stent removal is complicated, use 52315.
