Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Opt for 64517 for Hypogastric Nerve Block

Question: What should I report for a two-needle, superior hypogastric nerve block? What fees apply?

New York Subscriber Answer: Report 64517 (Injection, anesthetic agent; superior hypogastric plexus) for the block. This new code has 10 base units.

The 2004 RVU (relative value units) and Medicare allowable are 3.21 RVU and $112.78 for a facility location, and 5.08 RVU and $178.48 for a nonfacility location. These are the base amounts and are not adjusted for the geographic index, so verify the correct amounts with your local carrier.
