Reader Questions:

Reprogramming Is Key to Pump Coding

Question: What code should I report when my pain management specialist checks a patient's infusion pump?

Arizona Subscriber Answer: The correct code depends on the extent of your physician's service. If he checks the patient's pump but does not reprogram it, report 62367 (Electronic analysis of programmable, implanted pump for intrathecal or epidural drug infusion [includes evaluation of reservoir status, alarm status, drug prescription status]; without reprogramming).

If your physician does reprogram the pump, report 62368 (... with reprogramming) instead.  -- Answers to You Be the Coder and Reader Questions were provided by Scott Groudine, MD, an anesthesiologist in Albany, N.Y.
