747.3 May Get 5th Digit Options Under ICD-9 2012

Changes to embolism coding may be on the horizon, too.CMS has posted proposed changes to diagnosis coding to go into effect Oct. 1, 2011.Your cardiology practice should be prepared to use new embolus codes:415.13, Saddle embolus of pulmonary artery444.01, Saddle embolus of abdominal aorta444.09, Other arterial embolism and thrombosis of abdominal aortaV12.55, Personal history of pulmonary embolism. Additionally, 747.3 (Anomalies of pulmonary artery) will likely be replaced with codes requiring a fifth digit to specify coarctation and atresia, arteriovenous malformation, or other anomalies.Watch for more details in next month's issue of Cardiology Coding Alert.
