996.01 Helps Report PMT

Question: How do I report pacemaker-mediated tachycardia?

Answer: You should report both 996.01 (Mechanical complication due to cardiac pacemaker [electrode]) and 427.1 (Paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia), according to AHA’s Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM (2006, Vol. 23, No. 2).

Pacemaker-mediated tachycardia (PMT) means the pacemaker paces the ventricles at too fast a rate. It can also refer to a specific type of reentrant tachycardia in patients with dual-chamber pacemakers.

ICD-10-CM includes a variety of 7-character codes in the T82.- range (Complications of cardiac and vascular prosthetic devices, implants and grafts). Code 427.1 crosses to I47.2 (Ventricular tachycardia).
