Adenosine Injections

Question: Could you please provide us with the appropriate HCPCS code for when we give injections for adenosine, 60 mg? We have received conflicting information from our Medicare carrier.

Answer: There are two codes for adenosine injections in the HCPCS 2000 manual. Code J0150 is for a 6 mg injection, and J0151 is for a 90 mg injection, says Felecia Bernstein, CPC, EMT, a coding and reimbursement specialist and president of the Monmouth County, N.J., chapter of the American Academy of Professional Coders. (Note: These codes are new; in HCPCS 1999 they were listed as temporary or Q-codes.) A 60 mg injection, therefore, should be listed as J0150 with the number 10 in the units box, to indicate 10 x 6 mg of adenosine was injected into the patient. If the carrier pays for only 1 unit (i.e., 6 mg) the denial should be appealed. Bernstein notes that these codes are not to be used to report injections of adenosine phosphate compounds, which are reported using HCPCS code A9270.
