Reader Question; Avoid Modifier -51 for EP Studies

Question: Which modifiers should we use when reporting intracardiac electrophysiological studies (EPS)?

Answer: CPT specifies that the EPS codes (93600-93662) are exempt from modifier -51 (Multiple procedures). Most of these codes, however, do have professional and technical components (modifier -TC). Physicians should report the professional component (modifier -26) when the physician performs the EPS in a facility. Keep in mind that +93613 (Intracardiac electrophysiologic 3-dimensional mapping [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) and the ablation codes (93650-93652) do not have technical and professional components.
