Reader Question:

Calculate A9502 and A9505 Units Differently

Answer: As the definition states, you should report A9502 (Technetium Tc-99m tetrofosmin, diagnostic, per study dose) per study dose. You should be able to report one unit of A9502 for the rest study and one unit of A9502 for the stress study. Many payers have created policies to indicate that rest and stress are components of a single study, but specialty societies, such as the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, advocate counting rest plus stress as two studies.

Code A9505 (Thallium Tl-201 thallous chloride, diagnostic, per millicurie) is reported per millicurie rather than per study dose. For 3.6 mCi, you should round up to report 4 units.

Tip: The medical record should clearly indicate the amount of an agent that is administered as well as the amount wasted.
