Reader Question:

Move Payment Modifiers to First Position

Question: I started coding a long time ago, and I wondered whether you still have to put modifiers that affect payment in the first position. Does the order matter?

Answer: You should assign pricing modifiers first. “The Multi-Carrier System (MCS) used for claims processing requires placement of pricing modifiers in the first modifier position to process claims correctly,” according to WPS, the J5 Part B MAC, in its Pricing or Payment Modifier Fact Sheet at www.wpsmedicare.com/j5macpartb/resources/modifiers/pricingmodifiers.shtml/.

The Fact Sheet offers a list of payment modifiers, such as 26 (Professional component).
