Cardiology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

TEE with Bubble Study

Question: How should I code a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) and a bubble study performed together? Indiana Subscriber Answer: If the cardiologist placed the probe and acquired the images, the correct code for the TEE is 93312 (Echocardiography, transesophageal, real time with image documentation [2D] [with or without M-mode recording]; including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report). There is no separate code for the bubble study, which involves injecting agitated saline into the blood to look for problems such as atrial septal defect, and should not be reported separately.
