Question: Which diagnosis code should I use for "atypical" chest pain? Answer: You should use 786.59 (Chest pain; other) for atypical chest pain. This type of pain can be located in the left chest, abdomen, back, or arm. The patient may describe the feeling as fleeting or sharp. Atypical chest pain is unrelated to exercise and is not relieved by rest or nitroglycerin.
