Differentiate Between ICD Procedures

Question: The patient had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implanted and a subcutaneous ICD removed with a separate incision. Should I report code 33241 or code 0580T for the removal of the subcutaneous ICD?

Answer: If your cardiologist performs a subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) generator only removal, you should report code 33241 (Removal of implantable defibrillator pulse generator only). However, if he also removes the subcutaneous electrode, you can additionally report 33272 (Removal of subcutaneous implantable defibrillator electrode).

On the other hand, you would report code 0580T (Removal of substernal implantable defibrillator pulse generator only) for a substernal ICD generator only removal.
