Industry Note:

Obama Nominates Former Nurse For CMS Top Spot

New leadership for CMS is on deck for 2012. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Donald Berwick has announced his resignation. Berwick faced stiff opposition from the Republicans for a permanent appointment. The Obama administration has nominated Berwick's top deputy, Marilyn Tavenner, for the position. Tavenner is a nurse who was Virginia's top health official before joining CMS. Tavenner is so far enjoying wide-ranging endorsements from the likes of the American Medical Association and former George W. Bush-era CMS Administrator Tom Scully. However, Tavenner's $23,500 in political contributions from 1998 to 2011 -- more than the last five CMS administrators combined -- is raising eyebrows, notes the Politico newspaper.
