Industry Notes:

You may find Medicare appeals processes

You may find Medicare appeals processes a little more flexible under a new instruction from CMS. June 11 Transmittal No. 1986 (CR 6958) tells Medicare contractors that they may accept appeal requests via fax or a secure Internet application. However, they are not required to offer such options, CMS notes. And contractors must still accept appeals via regular mail, even if they offer fax and Internet appeals too. Requirements for an Internet application appeal process are contained in the memo at www.cms.gov/transmittals/downloads/R1986CP.pdf. A related MLN Matters article is at www.cms.gov/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/MM6958.pdf.
