Choose The Right Code For Your Patient's TIA

Question: Our new patient has a history of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) with confusion. She is getting Plavix for her history of TIA. How should I code for her?

-- Arizona Subscriber

Answer: The code for a patient who has had a TIA but suffers no residual deficits is V12.54 (Per-sonal history of transient ischemic attack [TIA], and cerebral infarction without residual deficits).

If your patient has residual deficits, code for them with codes from the 438 (Late effects of cerebrovascular disease) category.

Also list V58.63 (Long-term [current] use of antiplatelets/antithrombotics).
