Look To Documentation For Diabetic Manifestations

Question: How should I code for a diabetic patient with manifestations of peripheral neuropathy and Charcot's foot?

-- New York Subscriber

Answer: If you have documentation that indicates the peripheral neuropathy and Charcot's foot are manifestations of diabetes, then you should list the following codes:

250.60 (Diabetes with neurological manifestations; type II or unspecified type, not stated as uncontrolled);

337.1 (Peripheral autonomic neuropathy in disorders classified elsewhere); and

713.5 (Arthropathy associated with neurological disorders).

Tip: Neurogenic arthropathy is also known as "Charcot's neuropathy" or "rocker foot."
