Question: I have a patient with diabetic hypoglycemia. When I look this diagnosis up in my ICD-9 manual, it directs me to 250.80 (Diabetes with other specified manifestations; type II or unspecified type, not stated as uncontrolled), but doesn't indicate which manifestation code to list. How should I code for this condition? -- Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: Diabetic hypoglycemia is a metabolic complication, so it doesn't require a manifestation code. Diabetic hypoglycemia, when unspecified as to whether it's uncontrolled, is coded 250.80 (Diabetic hypoglycemia).
