Cut Through MBI Confusion With Latest Medicare Instructions

Don’t worry about getting your patients’ new Medicare numbers before they do using the newly available MAC portal MBI lookup tool. The Medicare Administrative Contractor lookup tool “will only return an MBI if the new Medicare card has been mailed,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services explains in a new message to providers. “This avoids potential confusion if the MBI is used before the beneficiary receives their new Medicare card/MBI.” CMS earlier warned against jumping the gun on MBIs by getting them off remittance advices.
