Quality Improvement:

Jazz Up Restorative With These Programs

If you're wondering how a ball or ring toss or rhythm band might qualify as restorative nursing that you can capture on the MDS, look no further than P3b.

That's where you code active range of motion, which can include other fun games and even domestic activities, noted Rita Roedel, RN,in an presentation on restorative nursing at the March 2009 American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators spring meeting.

Other AROM programs might include the following:

Basketball

Horseshoes

Target games

Balloon volleyball

Laundry folding

Drying the dishes

Note: Wheelchair mobility group programs can also qualify as AROM for coding purposes, said Roedel.

Examples include:

Wheelchair to dine

Wheelchair to visit

Wheelchair to activities

Wheelchair to church
