CMS Puts CHART ACO Transformation Model on Hold Until 2022

Rural providers now have another year to decide if joining a CHART Model Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is right for them.

Background: In 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) started testing the Community Health Access and Rural Transformation (CHART) Model to address equity issues in rural healthcare. CMS planned to provide $75 million in upfront seed funding to 15 rural communities as part of the Community Transformation Track (see Medicare Compliance & Reimbursement, Vol. 46, No. 19).

Additionally, CMS intended to pick 20 “rurally-focused” ACOs with payment tied to value-based care and level of risk in the hopes of “improv[ing] outcomes” under the ACO Transformation Track, the CHART guidance suggests.

Now: The Community Transformation Track is a go with the application deadline currently set at May 11, 2021. However, CMS has decided to delay the ACO Transformation Track, extending the deadline to spring 2022, the online guidance indicates.
